Nature Versus Nurture Is The Source For A Person...

The topic for my milestone three project is nature versus nurture what is the source for a person becoming an addict? Nature versus nurture is a long standing debate amongst many individual’s genes and environment. In my milestone I would like to focus on what could be the trigger for an individual to become an addict. Alcoholism affects not only the individual but also those around them an example the spouse, family members and children. Becoming addicted to alcohol has the ability to effect people for years and can influence children and adults to follow the same path. Drug and alcohol addiction has the ability to have emotional impact on many people. In the U.S the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) demonstrates 23.5 million adults living in U.S. had drug or alcohol problem. OASAS states 10 percent of American adults from the ages 18 and older, say they are in recovery. Ninety percent of alcohol abuse start in the teenage years. (Recovery from substance abuse and addiction 2012) Alcohol abuse is connected to more than 75,000 deaths each year and drug abuse has 200,000 deaths. (Alcohol deaths a year. 2005) Psychiatrist and Director of the Center of Alcohol at Yale Medical School E. M. Jellinek’s wrote a book that was essential to the concept of alcoholism as a medical disease. Jellinek’s created a disease theory on alcoholism.
